of sugary drinks (50 cents per two liters) to help cut child obesity and raise money for state funded health care, says the governor. Governor Patersen (NY-D) going to bat for tax today despite some consumer and grocery lobby antagonism. TV ads for both positions have been running since the New Year...

If I were in another country it would be amusing to watch these U.S. politicians try to tax themselves out of this mess...ain't gonna happen though.

Sorry SOT, but I don't find it amusing in the least. If they're going to tax sodas, why don't they legalize marijuana and tax it? I mean just because sodas are legal and marijuana is prohibited, you'd think they'd see the light.
Personally, I don't partake of either.
Did you realize that by drinking a single 20oz soda a day you consume a full 52 gallon barrel of the concoction of the brew in a single year? People are buying this stuff in 2 liter bottles, and the sugar content alone is frightening. It's one of the major reasons that diabetes is so rampant in our culture.
Look at the taxes already in NY, for instance, on cigarettes that cost $11 per pack. Soda, on the other hand, is cheaper than bottled water. HMMMMM, wonder why that is?
IMHO soda is just as addictive as nicotine, but creates obesity instead of lung cancer. What to do?

Taxes, unbfortunately, are how governments pay its bills, unless they go gold hunting abroad... or oil hunting as are the BRICK countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and Korea) now the USA is back on financial ropes...
